Crete,
though the largest of all Greek Islands, is actually more of a land in it's
own right. It has everything that one would need for a perfect "Greek
Island" holiday, with beautiful beaches, archaeological sites such
as Knossos and the other Minoan Palaces, and great entertainment.
Most visitors to Crete will arrive at Irakleion, the capital city of the island. Irakleion is also home to the famous archaeological museum, and Knossos, which is close by.
There are several resorts along the coast such as Agia Pelayia and Bali. Irakleion has some very impressive fortifications, Venetian Walls, up to 15 meters thick in some places. There are also some nice beaches which are located a little way out from the main town, but are easily accessible by car or bus.
Crete is an island that one should try to explore to fully appreciate.
It is an extremely popular island for both Greeks and tourists from abroad,
and is one that people return to, year after year.
